Best Marijuana Vaporizers for 2017 Reviewed -The Silver Surfer (SSV)
The Silver Surfer has been around for years and is known as one of the best “whip” style vaporizers around. Unlike the Volcano and the Extreme Q, the Silver Surfer or SSV as some call it only uses a “direct draw” inhale which is done using the “whip” (clear tubing) included.
Although reviews online hail The Silver Surfer as one of the best whip style vaporizers around, is it really? Let’s take a closer look.
- Easy to use, setup, maintain etc.
- Heats up in under 2 minutes
- Produces excellent tasting vapor
- Ceramic heating element surrounded by glass retains natural flavor and aroma
- Provides a great vape when in a hurry
- Vapor can be hot or cool depending on speed of your draw
- Vapor quality will vary greatly upon the strength of the draw
- Learning curve to get the best tasting vapor
- Glass heating chamber is held in unit horizontally making it hard to keep herbs packed at the bottom
- Herbs can combust when the proper draw isn’t maintained
- Only directdraw or whip style vaping / no bag system
There are several things that make The Silver Surfer a great choice in the desktop vaporizer world and as I mentioned earlier, many claim it to be the best whip style (direct draw) vaporizer out there.
One thing is for sure, 7th floor had the right idea as far as the glass encased ceramic heating element, it works great and really helps to keep the flavor of the herb pure and natural.
There is no temperature readout on the Silver Surfer, but you can increase or decrease the heat on the element by turning the glass knob on the front of the unit.
To start a session, you just turn the knob to around the 12 o’clock position and wait a minute for your element to heat up. Then “vacuum” up some finely ground herb by sucking it up through the whip and into the glass heating chamber.
Once you have your herb in the chamber, attach your whip using the ground glass connectors and then take a nice slow draw for about 10 or 15 seconds. If the vapor was thick and you are happy with it, leave it there, otherwise, turn the heat up or down according to your preference.
Once you find the best heat setting pull off the glass knob, and replace it so that the dial is pointing at noon at your favorite setting. This way you can always come back to it and get the most out of your herb right away, every time.
From there, you can also vary the heat by changing your draw speed. A slower draw will allow more time for the air to heat up making the vapor hotter, and conversely, a faster draw will speed up airflow making it cooler.
I found that it took me a few sessions before I found the exact right draw speed, but once I did, the vapor quality was fantastic.
The other really nice thing about the SSV is the heat time. In just under 2 minutes, it is fired up and ready to go. When you don’t have time to fill some bags or for a full session, The Silver Surfer is great. In under 5 minutes you can achieve quite a bit.
As far as the drawbacks are concerned, personally I don’t like the way the glass stem sits on it’s side in the unit. For some of my more humid herb, it’s not a problem and it’ll stay nicely packed in at the bottom, but with drier bud, especially when it gets a little dusty, it won’t stay and tends to just fall loosely to the side of the chamber making it more difficult for air to completely surround my herb. I sometimes use a little screen to hold looser herb in and that does the trick, so it’s not a huge deal but it can be a pain at times.
If you are someone who doesn’t foresee yourself using a bag system, and think you would prefer using a simple direct draw unit, this is definitely one of the best out there.
Comparing the direct draw vapor quality and intensity to the Arizer Extreme Q, the SSV does allow for some hotter vapor than the Arizer and because there is no fan, you can vary the intensity of the vapor substantially simply by varying your draw speed.
Bottom line is this: Great vape once you get the hang of using it. Based on the fact that you can regulate vapor quality and volume by draw speed, it is great for people who like vapor hotter than average.
The Silver Surfer is also great when time is limited because it’s so efficient. Within about 2 minutes you can be vaping and vape for as long or short a session as time permits.
Also, based on price being about half the Volcano, if you can do without the bag system, have a closer look. If price is your biggest concern, and you absolutely want the bag system, check out the Arizer Extreme Q. It’s similar in price to the SSV but does allow for use with either the bags included like the Volcano or direct using a similar whip to the Silver Surfer.
If you know you will only be using it directly and dislike the bags, this is definitely the one to get. Nothing on the market yet beats the intensity and potency of the direct draw on the Silver Surfer. The Extreme Q is the only one to offer dual use (direct or bags) and it is great in that way, but no other vape on the market beats the Silver Surfer using the whip, particularly once you’ve found your sweet spot.
