Best Dry Herb Vaporizers for 2017 Reviewed -The Volcano Review
The Volcano was the first really good herb vaporizer I ever used going back almost 9 years now. For years it has dominated the market and is considered by those who use it to be the best marijuana vaporizer ever made.
Several years have passed since it’s initial release and much has advanced in the way of portable technology, but in the desktop category, is the Volcano still king?
Let’s take a moment for a brief overview before we get too far into the review, shall we?
- Purest, most potent vapor production of any vaporizer
- Full convection vaporization
- Very easy to use, load, clean and maintain
- Best bag and valve system of any vaporizer on the market
- Large bowl size allows for fully customizable sessions (ideal in large group situations or alone)
- Ability to customize bag size
- Fully customizable temperature settings (digital or analogue)
- Quiet running
- Vapes material evenly and thoroughly
- Most efficient plug-in vaporizer on the market
- Still quite pricey compared to others
- Can only be used with the bag system, no direct draw
I started my vaping journey with a lesser machine and regretted not getting the Volcano right away. When I finally did get mine, it turned me into an almost full time vaper immediately and the benefits were numerous.
My breathing improved almost right away and I was able cut my herb consumption down by almost 3/4 without sacrificing effect in any way. It was actually an improvement over what I was feeling from my herb prior to vaping it.
I had many parties with that little machine and all my friends were jealous every time they came over and had the chance to use it.
There is really no comparison between the feeling produced from vapor as opposed to smoke. The intensity is so much more it’s almost hard to believe until you experience it. Back then, not too many had.
Eventually a couple of them got one too and loved it as much as I love mine. They are available in digital or analogue like my first one (as seen above), which is now referred to as “Volcano Classic”.
They both work exactly the same way but the digital displays the current and set temperature which is nice. I did eventually upgrade to the digital and I love having the display, but the vapor quality is the same with both and the classic is a little less costly.
Using the Volcano is remarkably easy, the large bowl (shown below) makes for easy filling, even for those with poor fine motor skills. You can vape as little as a 0.2 or fill the bowl with well over a gram at a time and fill several large bags with extremely potent vapor.
When you turn it on, you select your desired temperature, I usually aim for somewhere around 365-390 degrees Fahrenheit (usually between 5 and 7 on the classic). Once it’s on and set, wait for the oven to heat up to temperature which takes less than a minute.
Once the proper temperature is reached, install the herb chamber to the top of the machine, then your bag over that, using the valved bags included (as shown below). Turn on the fan and then just wait for it to inflate. An average sized bag will fill up in less than 30 seconds.
When it’s full, remove it and either install another bag or shut off the fan and remove the chamber from the top of the unit to avoid wasting any remnants. Then all that’s left is to sit back and enjoy what you just vaporized by inhaling it right from the bag! You can do more than one bag on a bowl, obviously more depending on how much herb you are using at the time.
I personally keep going until I get a bag with no flavor at all and then I empty out the bowl and repeat. It heats up accurately every time and consistently produces the purest, most potent vapor on each and every bowl.
As far as getting the most out of your herb is concerned, the Volcano is the best, most efficient vaporizer and vapes right through 100% of my material without ever combusting it or leaving any unvaped behind and therefore wasted. I don’t even really need to shake around the chamber to get all the vapor out. It is amazingly thorough.
It was with the Volcano that I had some of my most pleasurable early vaping experiences. You can even customize the bag length which allows for The Volcano’s famous extra long “party bags” (shown below). I’ve made bags as long as ten or twelve feet long.
This machine is a must have for the entertainer, particularly someone who would like to enjoy some fine herb with their friends without turning their house or apartment into a “hotbox”.
I would also recommend it to the medicinal user who requires high potency in relatively high quantities because it can run all day without issue and is by far the most reliable vaporizer on the market.
These days I very often opt for my more portable vaporizers even when I’m at home just because quite often I’m lazy, but when I do pull out my Volcano whether I’m alone or with friends, I’m always glad I did and I always vow to use it more often.
For me, The Volcano is the benchmark against which I measure all other vaporizers. As I mentioned earlier, for years it was the only thing worth talking about.
The Volcano allows for fully customizable vape sessions for as long or as short a time period as you like. You have the ability to adjust not only the temperature, but also the size of bag you prefer as well as the amount of herb to use at a time.
I do find that each strain requires slight variations to both to get the best vape, and there is a bit of a learning curve at first but as long as you are in the 365-400 range (between 5 and 7 on the classic) the results should be spectacular. Fine tune from there according to personal preference.
The only real downsides to me are the price (which is still relatively high), and the fact that you can only use it using the bag system (no direct draw).
As far as price is concerned, there is no question in my mind that it’s worth every penny, but for those who are looking to spend a little less, there are other options, like the Extreme Q by Arizer which is pretty good too and less than half the price.
There isn’t much to complain about with the Volcano other than price. Even that is debatable because in the long run, if you use it exclusively instead of smoking, it pays for itself. It does vape material more thoroughly than any other vaporizer on the planet.
In terms of the purity and quality of the vapor as well as the intensity of the effect, it is still unrivaled. For those who can afford the best of the best, this is the vaporizer to own.
For anyone with a passion for both weed itself and clean, pure, potent vapor, definitely consider owning a Volcano at some point. It is on the pricier side, but I can honestly say after almost 9 years with mine, it’s an investment you will not regret.
As mentioned, for those on a stricter budget, take a look at the Extreme Q. It’s no Volcano, but it’s quite good too and less that half the price.
