Best Portable Dry Herb (Weed) Vaporizers for 2017, Found, Tested and Reviewed

This section is designed to help you find the best portable weed (dry herb) vaporizer based on some of the most popular and debated choices for 2017. They are all listed below.

I initially started this blog highlighting the top 5 vaporizers on the market at the time which included both portable and desktop. There really wasn’t many great vaporizers on the market back then.

I’m quite happy to see that things have changed quite a bit in recent years! This site has grown so fast and kept me busy evenings and week-ends trying to get new vapes tested and reviews posted. The fastest growth has been in the portable category as you can see from the list below which seems to be growing all the time!

I still have quite a few vaporizers sitting here still waiting to be opened and tested! It’s quite remarkable to see how fast this new technology is advancing, how small portable vaporizers are getting and how many new players are getting involved. I can’t wait to see what the next 5 years bring!

The debate continues (and will probably always continue) online on popular sites like Twitter, Facebook and Reddit in regards to which vaporizer listed here actually is THE best portable vaporizer among this group.

Best Portable Marijuana Vaporizers for 2017, Found, Tested and Reviewed -Full Reviews of all the Top Dry Herb Vaporizers for 2017!My current top choice is the new DaVinci IQ while others swear by the Pax Series, Arizer Air, G-Pen Elite or even the Mighty. I have a friend who won’t use anything other than the Magic Flight Launch Box!

This section is designed to help you narrow down your choices and find the best portable vaporizer for your particular lifestyle, needs and taste.

Once you are dealing with the more high quality brands the rest is really just a matter of personal style, budget and preference.

Are you more concerned with performance and vapor purity like myself, or are you more focused on heating time and stealth?

How long do you need the battery to last between charges? How important are the aesthetics? Or, is budget your primary concern?

Since this list has grown so incredibly over the last few years, I have now broken them down into 3 main groups:

Best Portable Dry Herb (Weed) Vaporizers for 2017, Found, Tested and Reviewed Regardless of which category you choose from Best to Budget, I still would not include a vaporizer on these pages that I wouldn’t use and personally recommend regardless of the price. A poor vaporizer is a poor vape regardless of price, design, bells and whistles, etc.

As we all know, in most cases, you get what you pay for but I’ve come to learn that with vaporizers, more expensive isn’t always better and there are some great vaporizers on the market now that won’t break the bank.

The new Pulsar APX is a great example of that. It may be listed in the budget section but it’s a vape I really enjoy using, offers and fully ceramic heating chamber and it just works great.

Best Portable Marijuana Vaporizers for 2017, Found, Tested and Reviewed -Full Reviews of all the Top Dry Herb Vaporizers for 2017!

So, with that being said, don’t let the dollar amount be your only point of focus. Any vape you see listed on these pages, regardless of section, is only here because it is a vape that I have used and personally enjoy.

If you are a new vaper or someone who is looking to buy their first weed vaporizer, I can assure you that if you choose one of the vapes listed on this site, you will not be disappointed. The rest really is up to you.

Feel free to use the comment section for any questions, or if you’d like to recommend a portable vaporizer you think should be listed here as well, I’m always eager to try new vapes!

Best of the Best -The Current Best Portable Weed Vaporizers (2017)

#1 -The DaVinci IQ

DaVinci IQ Review -Best of the Best -The Current Best Portable Weed Vaporizers (2017)-Performance:  98/100

-Vapor quality:  98/100

-Pocketability:  98/100

-Discreetness:  96/100

-Usage time per charge:  90 minutes per 18650

-Price:  $$$

-Overall: 98/100

The DaVinci IQ is the newest offering by DaVinci Vaporizers, originators of both the Ascent and the Original DaVinci Vaporizer. The IQ is the best flavor producing vaporizer I have ever tested offering a fully ceramic heating chamber and vapor path.

It features a removable 18650 battery which allows for non-stop vaping on the go. It is quite small and a comfortable fit in any pocket or purse.

Although it is a dry herb vaporizer only and is not compatible with concentrates, as far as I’m concerned, it is by far the best vaporizer for dry herb on the market today. Read the full review here.

#2 -The Firefly 2

Firefly 2 Review Best of the Best -Top Tier Portable Vaporizer Reviews-Performance:  96/100

-Vapor quality:  98/100

-Pocketability:  88/100

-Discreetness:  70/100

-Usage time per charge:  3-4 sessions per battery

-Price:  $$$$

-Overall: 96/100

The Firefly Series is unforgettable. It originally was named due to the orange glow emitted by the heating chamber while in use.

The Firefly 2 is completely unique in design and vaping style. It is a fully convection vaporizer that only heats your herb while the firing buttons are activated allowing for sessions as long or short as time permits without wasting any herb.

The Firefly uses Borosilicate Glass for the vapor path which allows the natural flavors of the herb to come through exceedingly well. New to the Firefly 2 is the ability to select your desired vaping temperature from 6 preset temperature using a blue tooth app.

There is no question about it, not only is the Firefly 2 one of the most fun vaporizers to use with all my medicine, it was also definitely made with the cannabis connoisseur in mind. Read the full review here.

#3 -The Pax 3 by Pax Labs

Pax 3 Review -Best of the Best -The Current Best Portable Weed Vaporizers (2017)-Performance:  95/100

-Vapor quality:  92/100

-Pocketability:  99/100

-Discreetness:  98/100

-Usage time per charge:  Up to 120 minutes

-Price:  $$$

-Overall: 94/100

The Pax 3 is the latest edition by Pax Labs to the adored Pax Series. The Pax 3 is the first Pax vaporizer which allows for use with both dry herb as well as concentrated material.

The Pax 3 now features 4 completely adjustable temperature settings using a smart phone, blue tooth app. The battery holding capacity is the greatest of any Pax yet at 3500 mAh, giving about 2 hours of use per charge.

The vapor production is quite incredible and the heat up time is the fastest currently on the market. The Pax 3 comes with a full 10 year warranty and is another all around fantastic portable vaporizer. Read the full review here.

#4 -The Mighty by Storz & Bickel

The Mighty Vaporizer Review -Best of the Best -The Current Best Portable Weed Vaporizers (2017)-Performance:  96/100

-Vapor quality:  97/100

-Pocketability:  59/100

-Discreetness:  59/100

-Usage time per charge:  Up to 90 minutes

-Price:  $$$$

-Overall: 91/100

Although the Mighty by Storz & Bickel has been out for several years now, at least in my mind, it still deserves a spot in the “best of…” category.

The Mighty is manufactured by the same people who make the Volcano vaporizer. The same quality that goes into the Volcano can be found in the Mighty and the vapor quality is nearly as good.

The Mighty features a relatively large heating chamber making a great portable vaporizer to use with friends. It is extremely rugged and well made but rather bulky, so it doesn’t fit too well in a pocket and is far from being discreet.

The performance and the oven size make it a great choice nonetheless especially for situations when discretion is less important. Click here to read the complete review.

Mid Range -Best of the Mid Range Herbal Vaporizers

#1 The AirVape XS by Apollo

AirVape XS Portable Weed Vaporizer Review-Performance:  94/100

-Vapor quality:  96/100

-Pocketability:  98/100

-Discreetness:  95/100

-Usage time per charge:  Up to 45 minutes

-Price:  $$

-Overall: 94/100

The AirVape XS is the newest version of the AirVape Series by Apollo Vaporizers. Small, ultra-compact and lightweight, it offers a great vaping experience using a fully ceramic heating chamber and glass vapor path.

The AirVape XS is just slightly bigger than a credit card and charges fully within about an hour using a regular micro USB connection. It features an attractive digital LED screen and allows for completely adjustable temperature control in one degree increments.

Although it only gives about 40-45 minutes of use per charge, it offers vapor quality on par with any of the best vaporizers on this page and is a great option for quick, single sessions on the go. Read the full review here.

#2 -The Ascent by DaVinci

DaVinci Ascent Review -Best of the Best -The Current Best Portable Weed Vaporizers (2017)-Performance:  92/100

-Vapor quality:  96/100

-Pocketability:  90/100

-Discreetness:  93/100

-Usage time per charge:  Up to 180 minutes

-Price:  $$

-Overall: 92/100

My personal top pick for quite a long time was the DaVinci Ascent. The Ascent features a fully ceramic heating chamber and borosilicate glass vapor path and retractable mouthpiece.

Unlike the IQ, the Ascent is compatible with dry herb as well as concentrates. The purity of the flavor is fantastic and it thoroughly vapes through all my material without needing to be stirred.

The glass vapor path along with ample airflow cool the vapor quite nicely even at the hottest temperatures. The Ascent features a fully digital display and is adjustable in one degree increments up to 430 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Ascent also features the longest lasting battery of any portable vaporizer and lasts up to 3 hours per charge. Click here for the full review.

#3 -The G-Pen Elite by Grenco Science

G-Pen Elite Review -Best of the Best -The Current Best Portable Weed Vaporizers (2017)-Performance:  92/100

-Vapor quality:  96/100

-Pocketability:  98/100

-Discreetness:  98/100

-Usage time per charge:  Up to 90 minutes

-Price:  $$

-Overall: 91/100

Grenco Science’s new G-Pen Elite is one of my favorite new vaporizers to come out this year. It is a comfortable fit in the hand with it’s ergonomic design and produces some remarkably pure and great tasting vapor.

The G-Pen Elite features a fully ceramic heating chamber and an attractive digital LED screen. Vaping temperature is fully adjustable in one degree increments.

The G-Pen Elite charges using a micro USB connection and is less expensive than you’d expect based on the quality of the device. Read the full review here.

#4 The Tourist 2 in 1 by Focus-Vape

Tourist Vaporizer Review by Focus-Vape-Performance:  91/100

-Vapor quality:  96/100

-Pocketability:  78/100

-Discreetness:  78/100

-Usage time per charge:  Up to 90 minutes per 18650

-Price:  $$

-Overall: 90/100

The New Tourist Vaporizer by Focus-Vape is a 2 in 1 vape that does a great job vaporizing both dried marijuana bud and concentrates like hash, wax, shatter, etc.

The Tourist features a fully ceramic heating chamber for dry herb and a Titanium enail and water bubbler for concentrates. Like the IQ and the Air, the Tourist uses a removable 18650 electronics battery which can easily be switched out on the go.

The Tourist performs very well with all my medicine, providing clouds of pure, sweet tasting vapor. The only real drawback in my opinion is that it is a little on the bulky side for a portable. Click here for the full review.

#5 -The Air by Arizer

Arizer Air Review -Mid Range -Best of the Mid Range Herbal Vaporizers-Performance:  94/100

-Vapor quality:  96/100

-Pocketability:  85/100

-Discreetness:  75/100

-Usage time per charge:  Up to 60 minutes

-Price:  $$

-Overall: 88/100

The Arizer Air has been referred to by many as the “Solo Mini” because it really is a smaller version of the beloved Arizer Solo. Like the Solo, the Air uses a stainless steel heating chamber and a detachable glass vapor path. The Air produces some remarkably pure and clean tasting vapor and is a pleasure to use.

Similar to the IQ, the Air allows for the 18650 battery to be changed and charged separately allowing for continuous vaping on the go. The Air features 5 preset temperature settings and is one of the easiest vaporizers to use, load and clean.

The glass vapor paths are separate from the device itself which makes it slightly less portable that some others on this page, but Arizer does include a carrying case which does help keep things together on the go. It is certainly a lot more comfortable to carry around than the Solo was!

Another great vape overall. Read the full review here.

#6 -The V2 Series 7

V2 Pro Series 7 Review -Mid Range -Best of the Mid Range Herbal Vaporizers-Performance:  83/100

-Vapor quality:  84/100

-Pocketability:  98/100

-Discreetness:  98/100

-Usage time per charge:  Up to 120 minutes

-Price:  $$

-Overall: 86/100

The V2 Pro Series 7 is made by V2 Cigs, one of the longest standing and largest e-cig manufacturers in the world. The Pro Series 7 is their latest offering. It’s predecessor the V2 Pro Series 3, was the first vape-pen to actually vaporize dry herb.

The new V2 Pro Series 7 is a three-in-one vaporizer capable of vaporizing not only dry herb, but concentrates and e-liquid as well. For anyone who uses e-liquid vaporizers on top of dry herb or wax vapes, this is a great option as it would be the only device you would need for all three!

The V2 Pro Series 7 features a stainless steel heating chamber for dry herb, a “stove top” style coil for concentrates and a uniquely designed tank/atomizer combination for e-liquid.

Although it works, I’m personally not a huge fan of the concentrate chamber. I have never been a huge fan of the exposed stove top coils for concentrates although I know it’s a personal preference. The dry herb and e-liquid attachments however, work quite well.

For anyone vaping dry bud and e-liquid, it’s one I highly recommend. Click here for the full review.

#7 -The Atom by VaporFi

VaporFi Atom Review -Mid Range -Best of the Mid Range Herbal Vaporizers-Performance:  84/100

-Vapor quality:  84/100

-Pocketability:  98/100

-Discreetness:  98/100

-Usage time per charge:  Up to 120 minutes

-Price:  $$

-Overall: 85/100

VaporFi, another long standing vape manufacturer is known for both their superior electronic cigarettes as well as their dry herb vaporizers. Their original offering, the Orbit still finds itself on this list after almost 6 years.

The Atom is designed quite similarly to the Pax Series, featuring a stainless steel heating chamber and vapor path. The oven door and vapor quality are also quite reminiscent of the Pax Series, but it’s lees that half the price of even the original Pax.

The VaporFi Atom features 4 preset temperature settings and a uniquely designed mouthpiece that is comfortable to puff on and stays quite cool even after extended use.

For those who like the Pax style vaporizer but are on a tighter budget, it’s definitely one to take a close look at. Read the full review here.

#8 -The Solo by Arizer

Arizer Solo Review -Mid Range -Best of the Mid Range Herbal Vaporizers-Performance:  92/100

-Vapor quality:  94/100

-Pocketability:  59/100

-Discreetness:  65/100

-Usage time per charge:  Up to 120 minutes

-Price:  $$

-Overall: 84/100

The beloved Solo was one of the first great portable vaporizers on the market and still performs equally well today in terms of both vapor production and purity.

The Solo features 7 preset temperatures for a little more user control that some others, is ruggedly designed and mine performs quite well even after over 4 years of use.

I love the vapor quality but it’s shaped like a soda can so it loses points for portability and discreetness. When you factor in the glass vapor paths which aren’t attached, it’s not as portable as many others.

One trick I have learned to make it more discreet is to put it in a paper soda cup with a straw lid and puff on the “straw” when out in public.

Other than pocketability, It’s still an all around great vaporizer giving a full 2 hours of use per charge and has come down in substantially price since the Air was released. Click here for the full review.

#9 -Pax by Ploom

Pax Vaporizer Review -Mid Range -Best of the Mid Range Herbal Vaporizers-Performance:  88/100

-Vapor quality:  87/100

-Pocketability:  98/100

-Discreetness:  98/100

-Usage time per charge:  60-75 minutes

-Price:  $$$

-Overall: 82/100

For years the Pax by Ploom was one of the most popular vaporizers around. The original Pax is quite similar both in design and in function to the newest incarnation: the Pax 3.

Like the latest 2 versions, the original Pax utilizes a stainless steel heating chamber and vapor path. The Pax offers about an hour to an hour and a half of actual vaping time per charge and preforms nearly as well as the newest models.

Unlike the Pax 3 though, the original Pax is only made for dry herb and is not compatible with concentrates. Although it’s still a great vaporizer it is still pricey for a vape in this category and unfortunately, hasn’t come down too much in the last couple of years. Click here for the full review.

#10 -The Firefly

Firefly Vaporizer Review -Mid Range -Best of the Mid Range Herbal Vaporizers-Performance:  82/100

-Vapor quality:  88/100

-Pocketability:  92/100

-Discreetness:  85/100

-Usage time per charge:  Roughly 40 draws

-Price:  $$

-Overall: 80/100

The Firefly is another well adored vaporizer. It was named because the glow the heating chamber emits while in use resembles that of a Firefly.

The Firefly is unique in that it offers more user control than most other portable vaporizers. It is a convection vaporizer meaning that the herb is heating by air instead of contact. As you inhale, you draw super-heated air around your herb which vapes it on demand.

The Firefly is designed to feel almost like a pipe in use. The main drawbacks for me are the short usage time (only about 40 draws per charge) and the fact that it’s really easy to over engage the oven and burn your herb. Read the full review here.

Best of the Budget -Best Portable Vaporizers on a Budget

#1 -Pulsar APX

Pulsar APX Vaporizer Review -Best of the Budget -Best Portable Vaporizers on a Budget-Performance:  82/100

-Vapor quality:  82/100

-Pocketability:  98/100

-Discreetness:  96/100

-Usage time per charge:  60-90 minutes

-Price:  $

-Overall: 84/100

The Pulsar APX was a great surprise to me. I was approached by Pulsar to review it and although I was looking forward to it, I wasn’t expecting much after I saw the price. I’m happy I was so wrong!

The APX features a fully ceramic heating chamber and 5 preset temperatures. The mouthpiece is plastic but is comfortable to puff on and I get no byproduct flavors from it.

For anyone on a budget looking for a quality vaporizer at a decent price, this is a hidden gem IMO. Click here for the full review.

#2 -VaporFi Orbit

VaporFi Orbit Review -Best of the Budget -Best Portable Vaporizers on a Budget-Performance:  80/100

-Vapor quality:  78/100

-Pocketability:  92/100

-Discreetness:  88/100

-Usage time per charge:  60-90 minutes

-Price:  $

-Overall: 82/100

VaporFi’s Orbit is another great option on a budget. It’s a comfortable vaporizers to use and it vapes through a bowl thoroughly. The flavor is not as pure as some others but it works as intended.

I used the Orbit for quite a while and the thing I enjoyed most was how large the heating chamber is. It can easily hold the better part of a gram. When I wanted a large session or was with some friends it performed quite well.

Although I have since moved on, mine still works great after 3+ years and I still use it every now and again. Click here for the full review.

#3 -The Original DaVinci Vape

Original DaVinci Vaporizer Review -Mid Range -Best of the Mid Range Herbal Vaporizers-Performance:  90/100

-Vapor quality:  90/100

-Pocketability:  85/100

-Discreetness:  75/100

-Usage time per charge:  Up to 120 minutes

-Price:  $$

-Overall: 80/100

The Original DaVinci Vaporizer was my main go-to vape on the go for several years. One thing is for sure, it’s among the most ruggedly designed and durable vapes I have ever used.

The vapor quality is good but not as good as I’ve now grown accustom in recent years. It features a stainless steel heating chamber and is capable of vaporizing both dry herb and concentrated material including oils.

It’s a little bulkier than some newer models on the market but it it still more portable than the Mighty or the Solo. Although it wouldn’t be my top pick anymore, for those on a budget it’s still a far-cry better than smoking and it actually vapes through the entire bowl without needing to be mixed around mid-session.

Since the release of the DaVinci IQ, the price has been reduced even further and is still a worthy option today. Read the full review here.

#4 -V2 Pro Series 3

V2 Pro Series 3 Review -Best of the Budget -Best Portable Vaporizers on a Budget-Performance:  75/100

-Vapor quality:  78/100

-Pocketability:  98/100

-Discreetness:  98/100

-Usage time per charge:  60-90 minutes

-Price:  $

-Overall: 78/100

The Pro Series 3 was the first in the Series to be released by V2 Cigs. The Pro Series 3 is a three-in-one vaporizer like the Series 7 but is much smaller in size and is designed like a vape-pen.

Although I have never been a fan of vape-pens as the generally burn my herb, the tiny herb chamber for the V2 Series 3 does a great job of vaping through the bowl. It is very small though and only allows for about 0.1-0.2/gram of herb so it’s really meant for single, small sessions of just a few puffs.

The design is great for discreetness as it looks like a regular electronic cigarette and can be used as one as well with a quick switch of the magnetic atomizer/vaping chamber insert. For light users and those who do vape e-liquid it’s definitely one to take a closer look at. Read the full review here.

#5 -Magic Flight Launch Box

Magic Flight Launch Box Review -Best of the Budget -Best Portable Vaporizers on a Budget-Performance:  78/100

-Vapor quality:  85/100

-Pocketability:  78/100

-Discreetness:  80/100

-Usage time per charge:  8-12 draws per AA Battery

-Price:  $

-Overall: 78/100

The Magic Flight Launch Box or MFLB is unique unto itself. Although it is tiny in size, there are a few pieces to carry with it when on the go. The vapor produced is quite nice but there is a slight learning curve to getting the best results.

The Magic Flight Launch Box is probably the oldest portable vaporizer on the market and it hasn’t changed much in design in all that time. It’s a no-frills vaporizer that works great once you get the hang of it and comes with a lifetime warranty directly from Magic Flight. Click here for the full review.

  1. Hi thanx for the info ,but i was wondering about the heat times if they have one, im new to the vaping ,but if its healthier and the THC isnt deminished in any way why not. Geting back to the Q how long are the heat times compared with the desk top versions .

    • Hey Rubeun,
Good question! The technology has advanced quite a bit in the last few years and there isn’t a huge difference anymore in heatimes between desktop and portable.
Pretty much any of the vapes you see on this page will heat up to temperature in 2 minutes or less. Some are even under 1 minute.

    • Hey Charles,

I haven’t used that one yet, although it looks interesting so far. You never know. Once I test it, if it’s good, I’ll consider adding it here.

  2. Hi Shawn,

Where I live, we don’t have much(or is too expensive) weed/dry herb. I have more access to “traditional” hashish (sieved? Kief? Moroccan style) and especially Charas.

I’ve seen a lot of sites, asked many times, but nobody gave me a yes/no answer.
They always talk about concentrates(wax, shutter, liquid…), but it’s not what I have. Or the “sandwich” technique (with herb around the hash).

Is there a portable vape where I can use this kind of hash?

From reading your reviews, I guess Pax3 and APXwax may be what I’m looking for.

Can you help me? Is it too confusing?

I really need(and want!) to stop smoking tobacco. It doesn’t help with the lungs or the (back) pains.

    Thank you, in advance

    • Hey Marcelo,

I understand. I would definitely recommend the APX Wax for you, it works great with hash, kief, etc. It is only for concentrates though and does not vape dry herb.

If you sometimes want to vape herb, go for the Pax 3 but if it’s always hash, the APX Wax is great.

For help with quitting smoking, here’s some info.

      Hope that helps,
      Shawn

  3. Hi Shawn.

I haven’t bought a vaporizer yet, but I really want to. Main reason: remove tobacco from the equation.

I use mainly/almost exclusively hashish (especially this kind https://goo.gl/images/NU7rAS). Very rarely I have dry herb.

At first I wanted the Pax3. But for what I need (and following yours, and other suggestions) I’m leaning towards the APX Wax or Dabstorm2.

And then I read your Linx-hypnos-zero-extract-vaporizer-review… That looks like what I am looking for.

What’s your opinion? Is there a better option?

    Thanks for your help

    Marcelo

    • Hey Marcelo!

Nice to hear you removed tobacco from the equation! Congrats!

For hash, both the APX Wax and the Linx Hypnos are great.

I’ve been using the Linx a little bit more often lately and it’s growing on me every time but I would suggest going with the style you prefer most. They are both very good.

      Shawn
