Best Portable Vaporizers for 2017 Reviewed -The DaVinci IQ Review
I have been patiently anticipating DaVinci’s newest vaporizer for quite some time now! I only found out about the IQ a few months ago but I must say, it feels like I’ve been waiting forever!
If you’ve been here before, you’ll probably know how fond I was (still am) of my DaVinci Ascent. The Ascent was my all time favorite portable vaporizer for as long as I’ve been reviewing them…until now that is!
The IQ was certainly worth the wait. Not only is it a far better than my expectations, it’s also quite a nice step up from the already awesome Ascent both is design and function and has hands down become my new favorite daily go-to vaporizer.
Let’s take a brief overview before we get too far into the review itself though, shall we?

This new DaVinci IQ is (so far) the best portable weed vaporizer I have ever had the pleasure of testing.
We have seen quite a few new releases this year from some of the most popular vaporizer manufacturers, but I must say, the folks at DaVinci Vaporizers have outdone them all.
The new IQ is second to none in my opinion and it has added a new layer of enjoyment to my already great medicating sessions.
The first thing I noticed when I finally had it in my hand, aside from the awesome design, was the size.
It is quite small and compact for a vaporizer of this caliber. After having used the Ascent for so long, the IQ feels tiny! It’s only three and a half inches in height, less than two inches wide and under an inch thick.
It’s a comfortable fit, not only in the hand, but it also slides comfortably into any pocket or purse. Small as it is, you can feel the quality of the device as soon as you have it in your hand.
As I took it apart to give it a good cleaning prior to my first use I was quite impressed with the way all the components fit so tightly together. The machining is fantastic and when it’s all assembled, there is no looseness with any of the components at all. It’s a really solid unit.
Another design feature I love is the way the heating chamber is surrounded by a built in funnel area (shown on right). The way it’s shaped just makes it so easy to load with just a finger without making a mess.
Once I was ready to vape, I ground up about a half a gram of herb, but I only needed about half that for a nice tight pack of the oven. Initially I thought it would take a lot more, but 0.2-0.3/gram seems to be the right amount for me and was nice and tight in the chamber.
I started out by using the “precision mode” which allows you to dial in your desired temperature manually anywhere from 250-430 degrees. I set it to 365 to start and within about 30 seconds I was inhaling some pretty thick and remarkably tasty vapor.
Using the blue tooth app, you can fully customize how long you want your session to be along with set temperature increases at specific times throughout.
Although you don’t need to use the app to use the device, tailoring your own preferred vape temps with the app is always and option.
They have even included a boost option which can be useful and gives a little more user control. What the boost function does, is increase the temperature in the chamber on demand for as long as you engage the firing button.
Personally, I like to use the boost function towards the end of a session to get the most out of my herb but it can be used whenever you like, at will.
For myself, I prefer using it in “precision mode” which allows me to set my own temperature and increase manually as desired.
The flavor that this device produces is beyond incredible. DaVinci had not only incorporated a fully ceramic heating chamber once again, but they have improved upon the glass vapor path with a ceramic zirconia vapor path and “flavor chamber” (as seen on left).
The ceramic zirconia vapor path and flavor chamber retain all the benefits of pure borosilicate glass without any of the fragility. In fact, ceramic zirconia is more than 20 times stronger than glass.
That’s great for myself as I tend to be a little rough with these devices during my daily use. I have broken the vapor path on my Ascent a couple of times now, so for me, the added strength and durability is a huge plus.
The ceramic zirconia ball on the oven door keeps the herb well packed in the chamber and really helps the overall experience by keeping all sides of the chamber roasting evenly.
The vapor produced with a full chamber is better than anything else I have ever tried.
Like the Ascent, the oven temperature is extremely well regulated and gives me an extremely thorough roast throughout the bowl and I never need to stir it during a session.
A full chamber will hold between about 0.2-0.4/gram of dry herb, and you can actually adjust your desired session size by raising or lowering the ceramic ziconia ball on the oven door.
Once the herb is roasted, the vapor passes from the oven through the ceramic zirconia flavor chamber which is quite wide and does a great job in not only retaining the flavor of my herb, but it cools the vapor down nicely as well.
The flavor chamber itself can also hold a small bud of weed which enhances the flavor even further. Essentially the roasted vapor passes over/around your bud on it’s way through the enlarged vapor path and it does increase the flavor quite nicely.
Personally, I get such great flavor from a well packed chamber that I never really have the need to enhance it, but I have tried it with a few different strains, and it does add something to the overall experience.
I really like the way the added width cools the vapor though, even at higher temperatures over 410 degrees it remains comfortable to use, hold and inhale from.
The outer shell does get a little warm after extended use but never so that it’s uncomfortable to hold.
The DaVinci IQ comes with a 10 mm water adapter which is also ceramic zirconia (seen on left).
Although it is a water adapter, I actually like using it as the mouthpiece instead of the flat version because I find it easier to puff on and it allows for just a little more cooling of the vapor.
Although I would normally be disappointed with the fact that you only get about 1.5 hours of actual use per charge, in this case I’m not because you can swap out the battery anytime on the go.
The IQ uses a standard 18650 electronics battery (as shown below). I’ve started bringing a spare set of two with me when I’m on the go which gives me over 4 hours of actual vaping time during the day. I rarely use that much but it’s always nice knowing I’m covered no matter what.
If budget is a primary concern however, this probably wouldn’t be the vaporizer I’d most recommend.
For those on a tighter budget, I’d say stick with the Ascent which is one of the best mid range portable vaporizers right now.
If you are as much of a weed enthusiast and flavor purist as myself though, this is THE vaporizer I’d recommend most.
As I mentioned earlier, the IQ is the absolute best dry herb vaporizer I have ever used both in terms of overall vapor production and in the purity of flavor. From the buzz I see already surrounding this device, it would seem that most agree.
For those of us who are extremely health conscious as well, the extra dollars is well worth the added comfort of knowing there is no chance of any toxic chemicals leaching into the vapor at all. All materials used in construction are completely harmless and food grade.
The DaVinci IQ in my opinion is worth every penny no matter how you look at it. At this point, there really is no rival on the market as far as I’m concerned.
For me, just the added flavor and vapor production over my Ascent make it a winner hands down. When you factor in how indestructible it is along with a full 10 year warranty, it’s definitely a worthy investment.
I guess if you read the review, my feelings are pretty obvious with the new DaVinci IQ. As I mentioned earlier, this is the best portable vaporizer I have had the pleasure of testing thus far on this wonderful journey.
DaVinci has found a way to take an already great device and not only improve upon it, but completely revolutionize the standard in terms of portable dry herb vaporizers.
The ceramic zirconia is great at keeping the natural flavor profiles of the herb pure while the size and shape of the vapor path does a great job cooling and slightly sweetening the vapor.
The oven is a nice size for single sessions and for small groups up to about 4 people. The ceramic ball oven lid is adjustable to offer different session sizes which adds quite a bit to the versatility. You can use it alone or with others with a few turns of the zirconia oven lid.
I love the ease of loading the device too, the shape of the chamber opening really makes it easy to get the herb packed in. Particularly when you’re on the go or in a rush, this is a nice feature.
As mentioned, the only real con to this device is the price which is something that is different for everyone. It’s comparable to the Pax 3 price wise, and quite a bit less than the Firefly 2 and Mighty.
It’s also quite a bit better than all three in my opinion. Considering it’ll be the last vaporizer you’ll need to buy for at least 10 years, I’d say the price isn’t too bad after all.
Overall, if you are looking for the absolute best portable dry herb vaporizer on the market right now and you can afford a few dollars more than the Ascent or G-Pen Elite, I can assure you, you’ll be more than please with the DaVinci IQ.
Particularly if you are a marijuana vaping enthusiast and purist like myself, this is the device that will really give you the most enjoyment out of your herb. Check it out for yourself!
